50% of serious accidents happen at intersections

When you consider road safety, it’s certainly not uniform. Different stretches of highway and different road systems carry various levels of danger. The interstate highway system tends to be relatively safe, for instance, because traffic is divided and moving in the same direction.

But one of the places where you’ll find the greatest danger is at an intersection. When you look at all of the accidents resulting in injuries and fatalities, more than half of them take place at intersections. This means that serious crashes – or at least serious ramifications – are most likely in these locations.

What can drivers do to stay safe?

The problem here is that most drivers have no way to avoid intersections. They’re going to pass through many of them every time they drive, so this is just a risk they have to accept.

However, identifying intersections as dangerous points on the road can help drivers practice better defensive driving in these locations. If they’re at a four-way stop, they could take an extra second to ensure that no one’s going to drive through the intersection at the same time they are. When a traffic light turns green, they could look both ways before driving to make sure no one is going to run the red light.

Essentially, drivers just need to be a little extra wary of accident risks when they pass through an intersection. This extra attention can reduce the likelihood of a crash. Nothing will completely eliminate that risk, however, so drivers who have been injured should know how to seek financial compensation for medical bills and other costs.
