What are examples of negligent security?

On Behalf of | Apr 21, 2024 | Personal Injury |

There are certain scenarios in which people expect security to keep them safe. If this doesn’t happen, they could suffer injuries. If this was through a criminal action – such as a robbery gone wrong – then they clearly would blame the person who committed the criminal act. But they may also blame the security for being negligent and not preventing it.

If security was negligent, it may be possible to seek compensation for medical bills, lost wages and other costs from the business that was supposed to provide that security. So what are some examples of how this could occur?

Security personnel

To start with, of course, there are hotels, apartment buildings and businesses that have security personnel on the premises. If these security officers are skipping shifts or not watching the cameras when they’re supposed to be, criminal activity could happen without their knowledge. They can’t prevent everything, but they do have to provide a reasonable level of security.

Security systems

There can also be issues with the systems that are in place in the building. For example, hotels have doors that automatically lock and only open with card readers. But if a lock or card reader malfunctioned, someone else may be able to access the room and injuries could occur.

Poor lighting

Finally, lighting plays a big role in security because it is a deterrent. If there isn’t proper lighting within the building or even in the parking lot, it can sometimes be argued that criminal activity is more likely.

What compensation do you deserve?

If you’ve been injured on someone else’s property, you may have questions about what compensation you deserve or how to seek it. It can be very beneficial to work with an experienced legal team.
