Unfortunately, you may find yourself sharing the road with a driver who deliberately engages in behaviors that put you and other road users at risk. Examples of these behaviors include speeding, tailgating, yelling, improperly changing lanes, running the red light and disregarding traffic signals and road signs.
So, what can you do to stay safe?
Stay calm
You should stay calm and focused when dealing with an aggressive driver. It can be unwise to yell back at a driver who yells at you, slam on your brakes to notify a tailgater to increase the safe following distance or honk to respond to gestures.
Staying calm is the best way to prevent the situation from escalating, allowing you to reach your destination safely.
Let them pass
If an aggressive driver is behind you, let them pass. You should not refuse to give them way when you can safely do so.
When they pass you, avoid making eye contact. If you give a driver who does not have regard for you eye contact, they may view it as a challenge. Accordingly, they may want to respond to it by engaging in more aggression.
Drive to a safe place
If you believe you are unsafe, perhaps you have given the aggressive driver way, but they refuse to pass or their actions begin to be personally directed at you, consider driving to a safe place, such as a police, gas or fire station. You can also go to a well-lit parking lot or hospital. Then, call the police. Provide your information, details about the other vehicle and your location.
Someone threatening you on the road can be stressful. If they injure you, legal guidance can help you fight for your rights.
