3 things to remember if someone is tailgating you

On Behalf of | Aug 31, 2024 | Personal Injury |

Following too close, or tailgating, is one of the most dangerous things a motorist can do. By failing to stay far enough back they do not leave themselves enough time to react to maneuvers by the driver in front.

What can you do if you have a driver sitting right on your tail? Here are some things to bear in mind:

1. You need to be the one to move

You cannot make the other person move further back. While you may not feel you should be the one who has to move, it is better to just accept it as the safest option.

2. Do not assume anything

You might assume the other person is doing it because they are ignorant. Or, you might assume they do not realize and would appreciate you letting them know they are too close by blinking your brake lights at them. You cannot know such things for certain so it is best not to try and second guess another driver.

Maybe they are not ignorant, but scared and in a rush to get to the hospital because they have a seriously ill passenger in their car. Perhaps they are not distracted, but spoiling for a fight and will take you blinking your taillights at them as the provocation they need to ram you off the road.

3. Do not lose your cool

One person driving badly is dangerous enough. Two people doing so (which is what will likely occur if you let the situation wind you up) is even more so.

If a crash occurs, take great care as if they are wound up they could take things further when you are stationary. Avoid contact if possible, call the police and then learn about your options to claim compensation.
